I want to ride my bicycle – Cycle to Work Day 2020
Next month, it’s National Cycle to Work Day - the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event. And, what better place to celebrate than in the cyclist’s paradise known as Milton Keynes.
Borrow a bike for the day? Or park and ride.To get you back in the saddle and your legs moving, we’re sharing how employers, employees, and teams can get involved and even win a prize or two for taking part.
When is Cycle to Work Day 2020?
Cycle to Work Day is on Thursday 6 August 2020. It’s a free event, open to everyone, with just one requirement: you’ve got to cycle to work.
Cycling to work has many benefits, including physical health, mental health, productivity and cost-savings. It’s one of the easiest exercise routines to keep up, too, because it becomes your method of transport, taking willpower out of the picture.
Milton Keynes is also the perfect location. The 273km of Redways allow you to ride safely across the city and explore miles of parklands, lakes and, for the more adventurous of you, woodlands. We’ve even got a BMX track.
And, if you’re a resident of Witan Studios, you have no excuse. You can lock your bike up in our secure bike shelter and get ready for the day in the fully equipped shower and changing rooms. We’ve even got a couple of spare bikes if you don’t have your own.
How to get involved in Cycle to Work Day 2020
Cycle to Work Day 2020 comes at the perfect time. Not only should the weather be (we hope) stunning, but after months of being homebound and on the lockdown diet, it’s the perfect excuse to get active, take in the fresh air and inject some fun into your life.
So, how do you get involved?
Employers
Head to the Cycle to Work Day website to download a pack full of promotional materials and start shouting and singing about it to your employees. You can further promote the event by running competitions, putting on a biker’s breakfast and reminding employees about your Cycle to Work purchasing scheme.
Employees
If you have your own bike, perfect; if you don’t, it doesn’t matter. At Witan, we have two bikes you can use during the day, or you can use one of the 300 Santander bikes across the city. Once you’ve sourced your wheels, use the interactive Redway map to plan your route to work. Even better, plan a route that encourages other colleagues to join you along the way - cycling doesn’t have to be a solo sport.
Teams
A little competition is great for motivating more people to take part. Love To Ride is running seven weekly cycle changes with lots of prizes on offer. Just sign your company up and get colleagues to log their rides to be in with a chance of topping the leader boards and winning big.
How to get involved beyond Cycle to Work Day 2020
The cycling fun doesn’t have to stop on 7 August either. There are plenty of ways to continue biking to work and enjoying the health benefits that cycling brings.
If you hired a bike for Cycle to Work Day, why not speak to your employer about purchasing your own wheels through the Cycle to Work Scheme? If your team got really involved in the Love To Ride challenge, why not take part in their monthly competitions and compete against other Witan and Milton Keynes businesses? And, if you can’t get enough of cycling to work, why not join one of the local cycling clubs such as the Broughton Cycling Group.
Finally, we want to see you taking part. Tag us on Twitter (@LetReadyUK) with your cycle to work photos, using the hashtag #cycletoworkday.
