Bridgewater Way
One of 6 new ‘cycleways’ which now serve Greater Manchester, Bridgewater Way is made up of several resurfaced canal towpaths that link Manchester city centre to Altrincham, Castlefield and the Intu Trafford Centre. Brisgewater way is a large regeneration project which offers a refreshing approach creating a 39-mile leisure route which benefits walkers and cyclists in the Greater Manchester area. It connects a wide range of communities in the Mersey Basin and North West via the nationally iconic Bridgewater Canal.
There is an abundance of access points, making it easy to join the route at any time, whilst allowing cyclists to take in some of Manchester’s proud history by cycling along England’s first canal that was constructed without an existing watercourse. This cycle route is absolutely traffic-free with an all-weather surface so that cyclists can amble along regardless of what the Manchester weather has in store, there's even solar lighting guiding you through the darker sections of the course.
Cycle from Broadheath through to Trafford Park, where you can explore paths which lead you to the modern architecture of Salford Quays. Soak up the hustle and bustle of MediaCityUK, then trundle on for a bit of shopping at the intu Trafford Centre which has nearly 300 stores, you may need a super size pannier to fit all your nick-nacks in, a truly Mancunian experience.
Fallow-field Loop
Fallow-field Loop is 8 miles of fascinating cycle ways, it is one of the longest urban cycleways in the UK, filled with interesting sights. The loop is a former line on the Manchester Central Station Railway, which has made it easy to construct the route as a flat and well surfaced trail, it's a great ride for beginners. You can find plenty of beautiful parks and open spaces which are linked by the linear park and wildlife corridor of the route, it offers a side to Manchester that many would not think existed considering the city's urban sprawl.
Broughton Cycleway
This is thought to be the longest segregated cycle route in the UK. Broughton Cycleway features various traffic islands and bollards which provide a fairly safe, traffic free way to access Manchester city centre along Blackfriars Road. It winds its way from Broughton to the Manchester city centre, providing a cheap and active transport option which cyclists can follow leading them straight to the heart of the city, allowing cyclists to enjoy all that central Manchester has to offer.
