MK Redways & Cycle Paths
Milton Keynes is a haven of great cycle routes for the active who love to get about via pedal power. It is a paradise of cycle paths waiting to be discovered. There are bike rides to match those just wanting a leisurely pootle and some great tracks for the more serious cyclist. There are challenging mountain bike trails or family friendly lakes and parkland routes just waiting to be explored.
Pop in for a coffee when you're close by. Or maybe see what's going on in our MK courtyard & garden?Milton Keynes has over 200 miles of shared-use paths, known as Redways, for cycling and walking. These are traffic-free network which cover much of the city. Some of these Redways even extend out to connect to the older towns which surround Milton Keynes.
Redway Super Routes
There is a network of 13 Super Routes which criss-cross MK creating direct routes for cycle commuters. These routes closely follow the road network whilst connecting residential areas to key destinations, from areas with industry and employment to main transport hubs. The Reedways are an important part of Milton Keynes. They are shared-use routes for people on foot or on cycles. The traffic-free network is popular for leisure, for commuting and for staying active. Redways may be used by anyone cycling and walking including people with pushchairs or prams and those in wheelchairs (including powered wheelchairs / mobility scooters).
Campbell Park
Campbell Park is a great off-road cycle trail. The trail caters for the increasing popularity and demand in cycling, whether it be for the beginner or avid mountain biker. There is off-road cycling, which was first conceived after the Cyclocross and the World Cup event back in 2014. The course was inspired by both of these challenging courses and was modified to enable riders to enjoy some of the quieter parts of Campbell Park too. Do not be fooled though, there is some challenging undulating terrain – great for a work out!
There is a track which has been mown into the long grass across the park and through woodland areas featuring some turns, which are more obvious with gravel markings. Each lap is 2.5km and has been created to be suitable for less experienced riders.
The track is specific for any cyclist with Mountain (MTB), Cyclo-cross (CX) or Gravel bikes and has been created to not be too technical although there are some steep sections with riders climbing to 85m per lap!
Grand Union Canal
The Grand Union Canal is a brilliant route of cycle friendly tow paths which is part of the British canal system.
Grand Union’s main line begins in Britain’s second largest city, Birmingham and finishes in the capital, London. The route stretches for 137 miles (220 km) with 166 locks.
The MK section heads due south from the southern edge of Milton Keynes to Leighton Buzzard with improvements to the towpath south of Bletchley.
Many regard the Milton Keynes section as one of the best parts for cycling on the whole 137 mile canal. The route is of excellent quality and continues south beyond the centre of Leighton Buzzard for another 1 1/2 miles to a pub near Grove Lock before changing to a grass path.
